Professional Chambers

How the Notarial Profession is organised in Austria
All civil law notaries and candidate-notaries in one federal state together form a collegiate body of civil law notaries.

The civil law notaries in the region of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, as well as those in the region of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, form a joint collegiate body. Every collegiate body elects the office-holders of the civil law notarial chamber by secret ballot. All six notarial chambers are made up of a president, the notaries and candidate-notaries.

The notarial chambers are public-law entities. Their main responsibilities are monitoring civil law notaries and candidate-notaries in their conduct of business, disciplinary oversight, and arbitration in the event that differences of opinion arise between notaries and their clients. They are involved in the appointment of notarial posts and liaise with other professional organisations in Austria and abroad. The Austrian Chamber of Civil Law Notaries is based in Vienna. It consists of delegates from the six notarial chambers who elect the President and the Standing Council. The Austrian Chamber of Civil Law Notaries is empowered to issue binding guidelines on the conduct of business of notaries and candidate-notaries and represents the interests of the notarial profession.
